Clan of William McOrmond
As Robert Hughes, the author
of 'The Fatal Shore' writes:
'It did give a fresh start to many thousands of people who would have been
crushed in spirit or confirmed in crime by long stretches in prison. And the
post-colonial history of Australia exploded the theory of genetic criminal
inheritance. Here was a community of people, handpicked over decades for their
'criminal propensities' and for no other reason, whose offspring turned out
to form one of the most law-abiding societies in the world.'
Immigration to Australia
One of the first documented of our clan to have left Ireland was John McOrmond's son, William, born in 1809. The precise motivation of this emigration is unknown - however, as previously discussed, we can attribute many of the adverse affects of the great famine in Ireland as likely motivators.
We know in certainty, he was a guard aboard a prison ship. This is an indication he followed somewhat in the footsteps of his father - that is to say, working in law enforcement, i.e., police génre of the time. Dates to determine William's original emigration is based on the date of birth for his son, James, b: 1850 Kildare, Ireland - noted as: "Born on "William Jardine" ship" by Leanne - then, is calculated in James' death: August 05, 1850 - Tasmania, Australia.
Among other facts known are
births of two more of his children, William McOrmond b: 1854 - Kildare, Ireland
and Mary Ann McOrmond b: July 28, 1857 - Longford, Tasmania, Australia. Since
William's son, James died in Australia, 1850 and son William was born in Ireland,
1854, it is presumed he made more than one travel from Ireland to Australia.
These facts position themselves in continuity with William's brother James,
who traveled back and forth form Ireland to Canada on more than one occasion.
